What to Expect

What to expect during your visit to the EMU

  • Each patient will be admitted to a private room with a private bathroom.
  • EEG electrodes will be affixed to the patient’s scalp to record their electrical brain activity during their stay.  These electrodes are connected to the recording equipment and even though the patient is able to get up and move around they are required to stay in the room during their entire stay.
  • Patients will not be able to wash their hair while the electrodes are attached but can wash at the sink or use a wash basin which is provided.
  • The patient's electrical brain activity, video, and audio will be recorded 24 hours a day.  There will be an event button that the patient or person staying with the patient will be instructed to press when the patient experiences an event (Aura or warning sign of impending seizure, seizure, or spell).  Since audio is recorded it is encouraged to describe out loud what is happening at the time of the symptoms.
  • Medications that the patient is currently taking may be adjusted, decreased or discontinued while in the EMU.  The physician will discuss this with the patient before the changes would be made.
  • The length of stay will vary with each patient but plan on a 3-5 day duration.
