If you are planning to have joint replacement surgery at Saint Thomas Health, you can attend one of our pre-operative education classes, which explain in detail what to expect before and after the surgery. During the class, a physical therapist works with each patient and provides exercise instruction. Research has shown that pre-surgery exercise programs promote a better post-operative result. You will also receive an educational notebook so you can continue the exercise program at home. For your convenience, pre-admission lab tests are performed immediately following the class. Valet parking is also available.

These surveys will help you and your physician assess if you are a candidate for joint replacement. Medicare as well as other payers ask for documentation of symptoms, failed treatments, pain levels, functional impairments, imaging studies. In addition, a surgeon assessment will help to determine whether you will meet the medical necessity criteria for surgery.
