Breast Health Concerns

Most women experience some type of breast problem during their lifetime. If you find a lump or notice a change in your breasts it is important not to panic. Remember, most breast disorders are benign (not cancerous).

However, don't ignore the changes. A woman's chance of developing breast cancer increases with age, that is why it is so important to first speak with your physician regarding what your next steps should be.

Often, your physician will recommend getting a diagnostic mammogram. Mammography uses an x-ray examination of the breast to detect important changes years before they can be felt. Mammography is the best way to find breast cancer at an early stage. During that visit you may also have a breast ultrasound. Ultrasound uses sound waves to distinguish between the normal and abnormal breast tissues, as well as differences in breast masses.

Our board certified radiologists are experts at reading mammograms. They will interpret your results and make recommendations for futher treatment the same day as your visit. The may even recommend a breast biopsy.

Breast biopsies are done using several different guidance techniques. The most common of those are Ultrasound Guided Core Biopsy and Stereotactic Breast Biopsy.

These procedures provide a less invasive, more comfortable way to obtain tissue samples and evaluate breast abnormalities; in some cases they replace an open surgical breast biopsy.
