Our History

Saint Thomas Health is Middle Tennessee’s healthcare leader, with 2010 admissions of 64,737, more than any other system. Formed in 2002, it brought together Baptist Hospital (founded in 1918), Saint Thomas Hospital (founded in 1898), and Middle Tennessee Medical Center (founded in 1927). The system also includes The Hospital for Spinal Surgery, Hickman Community Hospital, Baptist Sports Medicine, Saint Thomas Outpatient Imaging (eight centers), 13 ambulatory surgery centers, 250 physician practices, and 18 other subsidiaries.

Saint Thomas Health is a member of Ascension Health, the nation’s largest not-for-profit health system, and the largest Catholic health system.
