Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Diabetes is a serious disease that can cause chronic organ damage resulting in strokes, heart attacks, limb amputations, blindness, kidney failure and other medical problems.

The Diabetes Centers of Saint Thomas Health offer comprehensive resources through classes, community events and specially trained staff. Through these, patients are informed on the subjects of nutrition, exercise, weight loss, acute and chronic complication, medication and stress management. Our nurses and dietitians provide education to those newly diagnosed with diabetes or those needing assistance in gaining better control of their diabetes.
